Harm Reduction Needs Source-of-Access Data

CCHRN says Alberta cannot protect youth or adults unless it measures where nicotine products are actually coming from.

Two risks can exist at once

Health Canada tells youth and people who do not smoke not to vape, while also stating that adults who smoke and switch completely to vaping can reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals, according to Health Canada vaping information. That is why source-of-access data matters.

The missing measurement

Product restrictions alone do not show whether youth obtained products from legal stores, peers, online sellers, adults, or illegal supply. Bill 208 does not create a source-of-access reporting system.

The better harm-reduction question

What channel is causing the harm, and what enforcement tool reaches that channel?

If Alberta answers that question publicly, the debate gets less performative and more useful.
